Over 40 years ago, violinist David Harrington dreamed up the idea to create a string quartet devoted primarily to performing contemporary music.  Music that had never been heard before and that was created by living composers.  This later expanded to include world music, jazz legends, rock artists, and contemporary classical composers who were no longer living.

Formed in San Francisco in 1996, the Cypress String Quartet has been praised by Gramophone magazine for its "artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion", while The Washington Post has written that their sound is "beautifully proportioned and powerful."

Classical guitarist, Jason Vieaux, has been hailed by NPR as the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation, while Gramophone magazine writes that he is among the elite of today's classical guitarists.  And just a few weeks ago, this innovative and expressive musician won the Grammy award for best instrumental solo in the classical category.

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and  Chorus is presenting a special Valentine's Day concert, Saturday night at 7:30pm.  The concert offers a potpourri of Romantic delights with a common theme of the masterful writer about love: William Shakespeare.  The program includes Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, Suite No.2, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade for Music for choir and orchestra (which sets text from The Merchant of Venice), and delectable favorites by Leroy Anderson and Cole Porter.
