Bringing Washington Square of NY to Knoxville. An open gathering for sharing acoustic folk music. People are invited to bring their guitars, banjos, autoharps, fiddles, mandolins, harmonicas, voices, and good cheer. Folk music in Washington Square Park in New York City was a major cultural phenomenon in the 1950s and early 1960s, often considered its heyday. During this period, the park was a gathering place for folk musicians, singers, and fans, becoming a symbol of the American folk revival. Every weekend, musicians and singers would converge in the park with guitars, banjos, fiddles, and more. These informal jam sessions drew large crowds and helped spread the music.Open and Free Expression: The atmosphere was informal, communal, and politically charged. Many participants were singing traditional ballads, labor songs, and protest anthems. Those were turbulent times with the growing Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War. Now, our world is once again in the throes of sudden change, conflict, and division. Maybe, if we can come together like the people at Washington Square. We could find some common ground and have fun together playing our instruments and lifting our voices together. Hope to see you there.
