Lisa Bielawa continues her spatial symphony series with "Knoxville Broadcast"

Matthew Motley speaks with composer Lisa Bielawa and Big Ears Community Outreach Coordinator Cecilia Stair about the process of bringing Bielawa's Knoxville Broadcast to life

On October 17 & 18th over 600 local musicians will gather in World Fair Park to premiere Lisa Bielawa's Knoxville Broadcast, a site-specific spatial symphony is inspired by the landscape, voices and musical traditions of the city. Performances are free and open to the all, as are three "pick up" ensembles for any who would like to experience the work as a performer. More details on the event and how to get involved can be found on the Big Ears Website.

A Kansas native, Matthew began his journey south by attending the University of Georgia. It was here that he got his start in public radio, working on WUGA’s classical program Night Music. After graduating in 2024 with degrees in music and computer science, Matthew joined WUOT as host of the Afternoon Concert.
