The genre of Choral Music can mean a lot of different things. It can refer to major works, such as Requiems, Masses, or Choral Symphonies. It can refer to sacred anthems or spirtuals, often sung during religious services. The term Choral Music can also refer to the abundance of short secular works that are performed in a variety of settings including, of course, your standard concert hall.
The Knoxville Choral Society, led by John Orr, is striving to perform it all. Earlier this season, the ensemble participated in a performance of John Williams' soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Soon after, they performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Now, the choir will present an evening of contemporary choral music featuring songs by pop artists such as John Legend and Ed Sheeran, rousing spirituals arranged by Stacey Gibbs, and sublime music by choral "superstars" Eric Whitacre and Ola Gjeilo.
