The KSO and KJO join together to perform the "Swing Symphony" by Wynton Marsalis

Melony Dodson talks with Aram Demirjian and Vance Thompson about the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's (KSO) May Masterworks series program, which features a collaboration between the KSO and the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. The two ensembles will present selections from the Swing Symphony by Wynton Marsalis.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (KSO) concludes its 2025-2026 season this Thursday and Friday nights with a Masterworks series concert featuring the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra (KJO) and baritone, Michael Rodgers. The program includes selected spirituals arranged by Margaret Bonds, Field Guide by Gabriella Smith, "On the Trail" from Ferde Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite, movements from the Swing Symphony by Wynton Marsalis, and the Finale from Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3.

This "potpourri" program explores the theme of "American Landscapes" and local collaborations. It is the first time that the KSO and KJO have collaborated to this extent: performing a concert work in which the two ensembles are totally integrated. Learn more about the music and the specific challenges of putting two different ensembles together in this interview with directors, Aram Demirjian and Vance Thompson.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
