Knoxville Opera presents Bizet's beloved "Carmen"

Melony Dodson talks with conductor, Noam Aviel and tenor, Ben Gulley, about Knoxville Opera's upcoming production of Bizet's Carmen

Knoxville Opera presents Bizet's Carmen: a classic tale of passion, freedom, and fatal consequences. Performances will be given in the magnificent Tennessee Theatre and are Friday, October 24 at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 26 at 2:30pm, with a pre-show talk at the East Tennessee Historical Society, beginning at 1:30pm on Sunday.

Stage directed by Keturah Stickann and conducted by Noam Aviel, this production stars mezzo-soprano, Renée Tatum as Carmen, tenor, Ben Gulley, as Don José, baritone, Jonathan Patton as Escamillo, and soprano, Karen Chia-ling Ho as Micaëla.

Both Aviel and Gulley have diverse backgrounds in music, with Aviel having begun her studies as a jazz singer and bass player, while Gulley has enjoyed a successful career on both the operatic and musical theatre stage.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
