The KSO, Featuring Shabaka Hutchings, Performs Copland's Clarinet Concerto At Big Ears 2022

Melony Dodson talks with Maestro Aram Demirjian about the KSO's performance at Big Ears 2022

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will be featured in one performance at Big Ears 2022. Led by Maestro Aram Demirjian, the orchestra will present Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte and two pieces by Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring and the jazz-influenced Clarinet Concerto, featuring Shabaka Hutchings as the soloist. Shabaka is a world-renowned British saxophonist, clarinetist, and band leader, perhaps best known for leading the bands Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and the Ancestors.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
