Edgar Meyer Reflects On Oak Ridge In Anticipation Of His Performance On February 17th

"Like father like son"

Award-winning double-bassist and composer, Edgar Meyer, says he was most influenced by his father, Edgar Meyer, Sr. who founded and directed the string program for Oak Ridge City schools for decades. Edgar Meyer, Sr. established the importance of learning music in school, a legacy that continues today. And now, Edgar Jr.'s son George joins the lineage, in his own right, as a violinist and composer.

A recent graduate of Juilliard, George has already been commissioned by soloists and prestigious music festivals to compose original music. The father and son duo will perform in Oak Ridge on Monday, February 17th for a fundraiser concert supporting the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association (ORCMA). They will present a twenty-minute work that they composed together, a few traditional fiddle tunes, and original music composed by each, individually.

In this conversation with Morning Concert host, Melony Dodson, Edgar reflects on growing up in Oak Ridge and talks about the importance of supporting local music organizations. He also shares his philosophy on how to keep Classical music alive and thriving.

George and Edgar's performance is on Monday, February 17th at 7:30pm at First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge. Tickets and information at http://www.orcma.org

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
