Nief-Norf's annual experience "Unsilent Night" spreads delight and wonder

niefnorf.org

Melony Dodson talks with Alex Dally, executive director of the Knoxville-based contemporary music organization, Nief-Norf. Their annual event, Unsilent Night, is December 5th.

Nief-Norf's annual event, Unsilent Night, is an opportunity to join together with others, create a unique musical experience, and spread a little hope and wonder to unsuspecting observers as the experience moves through downtown Knoxville. No skill is needed to participate...all that is needed is a mobile phone and the Unsilent Night app and preferably a bluetooth speaker. Nief-Norf will be able to provide a limited number of speakers this year for participants, as well as cassette tapes (one must provide their own player). Learn more in our conversation with Alex Dally, executive director of Nief-Norf.

Unsilent Night is taking place on Friday, December 5th. The meeting place is at the Emporium Arts Center in Knoxville around 5pm. Dress warmly for the 45-minute stroll through downtown. Parking may be limited due to First Friday events and the WIVK Holiday parade, so try to arrive early!

Additionally, this year there will be Unsilent Night events taking place in Johnson City and Chattanooga! The experience in Johnson City is on Sunday, December 7th at 5pm with a meeting place of Fountain Square. The event in Chattanooga is on Tuesday, December 9th at 5pm, with a meeting place of the Choo Choo Gardens fountain.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
