Ahoy! Knoxville Opera promises a swashbuckling good time with "The Pirates of Penzance"

Melony Dodson talks with conductor, Joseph Mechavich and soprano, Hanna Brammer. Brammer sings the role of Mabel in Knoxville Opera's production of The Pirates of Penzance.

Knoxville Opera presents Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta, The Pirates of Penzance on Friday, October 25th at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 27th at 2:30pm. Both performances will be given at the magnificent Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville. The show is stage-directed by Dean Anthony and music-directed by Joseph Mechavich, who returns to Knoxville after having conducted Verdi's La Traviata last season.

This beloved work by Gilbert & Sullivan is a great choice for those who aren't familiar with opera, for families, and simply for anyone who wants to have a good time in the theatre. The Pirates of Penzance is a comedy, sung in English, and is only about an hour and a half in length. The characters are "quirky", the costumes outlandish, and the tunes, catchy. Knoxville Opera is even hosting a pirate costume contest! More information on that can be found on their social media pages.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
