Melony Dodson talks with Marble City Opera Artistic/Executive Director and soprano, Kathryn Frady, stage director, Marya Barry, and tenor, Eddie Brennan

Marble City Opera is presenting not one, but three site-specific performances of Puccini's one-act opera, Il Tabarro. The first performance is on Thursday, June 13th aboard the Star of Knoxville riverboat as it sails down the Tennessee River. That event also includes pasta and drinks. The second performance is on Friday, June 21st at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore. And the final performance is on Sunday, June 23rd at Melton Lake Park in Oak Ridge. All performances are at 7pm. A rain plan is in place and ticketholders will be notified as needed.

Il Tabarro (The Cloak) is the first opera from Puccini's trio of operas known as Il Trittico. Learn more about the opera and some of the characters in this interview with stage director, Marya Barry, soprano, Kathryn Frady (who is singing the role of Georgetta) and tenor, Eddie Brennan (singing the role of Luigi). In addition, Marya talks about some of the challenges, but also the advantages of directing site-specific operas.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
