music.utk.edu

Melony Dodson chats with John Zastoupil, the new Director of Bands at the University of Tennessee. He talks about his prior experience, his vision for the UT Band program, and about what to expect in the upcoming academic school year.

John Zastoupil joined the UT College of Music faculty in the Fall of 2022. He comes to this position with a heart for serving through leadership. His passion and enthusiasm for building and improving the bands at the University of Tennessee is obvious and contagious. Already, he and Michael Stewart and Fuller Lyon (Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Director of Bands, respectively) have organized and led several events with the goal of reaching out to and involving the community—primarily young musicians.

Get to know John in this interview and learn more about his vision for the UT band program and get a sneak peek into what he has in store for the upcoming academic school year.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
