The UT School Of Music Becomes The UT College Of Music

Melony Dodson talks with Dr. Jeffrey Pappas, Director of the UT College of Music

The UT School of Music has been a department within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It offers degrees in music education, performance, sacred music, studio music and jazz, and theory and composition, as well as master's degrees in all of those areas, in addition to conducting and musicology. The School of Music has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the accrediting agency for music departments in higher education.

But as of July 1st, 2023, what was formerly known as the UT School of Music has become the UT College of Music. What does this mean? What kinds of changes will we see? Dr. Jeffrey Pappas Director of the UT College of Music, explains in this interview.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
