UT's Ready for the World Music Series Organizes A Celebration Of Ukraine

Melony Dodson talks with artistic director, Miroslav Hristov, exhibit and event coordinator, Nathalie Hristov and violinist, Solomia Soroka

The University of Tennessee's Ready for the World Music Series brings renowned artists to perform and discuss music from diverse regions around the world. Since its inauguration, the program has hosted seventeen concerts from underrepresented regions, offering an immersive experience of music, art, and culture.

The next Ready for the World Music Series features the country of Ukraine...a celebration that will take place on Sunday, February 26th in the Natalie Haslam Music Center on the UTK campus. Exhibits by artists from Ukraine, a display of cultural artifacts, and Ukrainian food prepared by local Ukrainian chef, Maryna Pusiak, and local restaurant, Potchke Deli, will begin at 12:30pm in the lobby outside of Powell Recital Hall, followed by the concert beginning at 2pm. Artisans will be selling crafts during the pre-concert event, with proceeds going to Ukraine.

The performance features three musical artists from Ukraine: violinist, Solomia Soroka (violin professor at Goshen College), clarinetist, Sergei Vassilev (principal clarinet of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic), and pianist, Angelina Gadeliya (piano professor and coordinator of keyboard studies at the University of Connecticut). They will perform music by Ukrainian composers, including a new work by Yevhen Stankovych.

Other events outside of the concert performance have been organized, including a virtual lecture about Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO), several masterclasses for UT School of Music students, and a lecture (given by Solomia Soroka) about Ukranian Music and composers.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
