Jeff Midkiff Performs His Mandolin Quintet No.2 With Members of the KSO

Melony Dodson talks with mandolinist and composer, Jeff Midkiff

Jeff Midkiff performs his Mandolin Quintet No.2 with members of the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, January 29th at 2:30pm in the historic Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. Joining him for this performance will be violinists, Sean Claire and Zofia Glashauser, violist, Joshua Ulrich, and cellist, Stacy Nickell Miller. Nicknamed the "Gypsy" quintet, Jeff drew inspiration from not only from "gypsy music," but also from Antonin Dvorak, whose Serenade for Strings is also on the program, in addition to Ethel Smyth's Suite for Strings. Midkiff returns to Knoxville, after having performed his Mandolin Concerto with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in 2016.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
