A Conversation with Trombonist and UT Alum, Jeremy Wilson

Matt Wan

As featured on WUOT's UT Concert Hall

Originally from McMinnville, TN, trombonist, Jeremy Wilson, auditioned for the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Vienna Philharmonic at just 24 years old. In what was his very first orchestral audition, Jeremy won a position with one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He credits his undergraduate education at the University of Tennessee School of Music in playing a key role to his success: his teachers, the numerous performing opportunities both on and off campus, and the belief that UT faculty instilled in him...that a kid from a small town from middle TN could go on to do great things. After playing in the Vienna Philharmonic for several years, Jeremy and his young family decided to move back home to TN, accepting a full-time teaching position at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, where he is currently associate professor of trombone. Learn more about Jeremy Wilson in this interview with WUOT's UT Concert Hall host, Melony Dodson.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
