34 million people in the United States, including 9 million children, are food insecure. In Tennessee, 1 in 9 people face hunger. Children fare even worse as 1 in 8 Tennessee children face hunger.
Rural communities are especially hard hit by hunger and food insecurity. People from African-American, Latino, and Native American communities have higher rates of hunger than other communities. Poverty is a common denominator in many instances of hunger and food insecurity.
Host Dr. Carole Myers is joined by Dr. Marsha Spence, a University of Tennessee Professor of Practice and the Director of the Public Health Nutrition program in the Department of Nutrition of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.
