The U.S. health system has not fared well during the COVID-19 pandemic and even before the pandemic, there were problems. At least 38,000 state and local public health jobs have been eliminated since 2008 and per capita funding for state health departments fell by 16% and by 18% for local health departments between 2016 and 2020. Dr. Carole Myers of the University of Tennessee College of Nursing speaks with Dr. Paul Erwin, Dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, about the state of public health and some paradoxes seen in the industry.
