Rita Gains Strength, May Become Category 5
Hurricane Rita is gaining strength as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico, with current sustained wind speeds topping 135 miles per hour. Forecasters expect the Category Four storm to hit the Gulf coast of Texas or western Louisiana by early Saturday.
Hayes, Porter and the Soul of Stax
An old theater in south Memphis that served as the studio for Stax Records is making its debut this weekend as the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Two of the top songwriters at Stax were Isaac Hayes and David Porter. NPR's Kathleen Schalch reports.

Turkey Agrees to Stay Out of Iraq
Turkey's top general says he won't send large-scale forces into Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq unless troops patrolling the border regions are attacked. The announcement reassures Turkey's NATO allies and Kurdish leaders, who oppose any large Turkish deployment in Iraq. NPR's Guy Raz reports.

Blast Rocks Baghdad Police Station
A car bomb explodes near the Baghdad police station, wounding at least 14 people and damaging the offices of the U.S.-appointed police chief. Military officials deny that the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, knew about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners in American custody.
