Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to Perform at the 2020 SHIFT Festival in Washington, DC

WUOT Morning Concert host Melony Dodson speaks with KSO Music Director Aram Demirjian and KSO Director of Education and Community Partnerships Jennifer Harrell, about the orchestra's upcoming invitation to the SHIFT Festival in March 2020 in Washington, DC. Maestro Demirjian explains what the festival is and also talks about what the symphony will perform while they are in Washington, DC. Jennifer outlines all of the various ways that the Symphony interacts with and improves our community.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is one of only four orchestras selected to participate in the SHIFT Festival. The other orchestras are the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Joining the KSO will be members from the UT Symphonic Brass ensemble and two Knoxvillian poets.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
