Widespread snow and ice risks with weekend winter storm

An expansive major winter storm impacts much of the country Friday through Sunday, with a range of ice to snow.

A winter storm is expected to spread from the Midwest across much of the eastern U.S. with ice and snow.

This could bring damaging ice and heavy snow for millions from Texas to the mid-Atlantic states this weekend, then an extended freeze continues the hazardous conditions into next week.

There is a line of rain changing to freezing rain and sleet that Meteorologists are monitoring closely across the south. This line can move north at times throughout the weekend, impacting the actual snow depth. That can lead to ice weighing on power lines and tree branches.

The snowfall may change to rain for parts of Tennessee, but the extended freeze after can lead to new areas of ice by Monday.

Plan ahead to be in a safe place by the weekend, and keep up with the latest, local forecast.
