Founded in 2016 by composers, Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid, Luna Composition Lab provides mentorship, education and resources for young female, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming composers ages 13-18. The program has achieved national recognition as one that not only celebrates underrepresented voices, but also by providing a support system for continued success.
The Luna Lab fellowship offers six composers eight months of one-on-one mentorship with professional composers annually, opportunities to have an original work workshopped, premiered and recorded, a culminating week-long festival in New York City filled with masterclasses led by leading professionals, networking events, professional development activities, and a high profile public concert, during which the fellows' pieces are premiered.
On Sunday, March 22nd, Knoxville's River and Rail Theatre Company will partner with Luna Composition Lab in celebration of Luna Lab's 10th Anniversary. The theatre company and members of the Knoxville music community will present a series of newly composed musical theatre works by Luna Lab alumni, Madeline Clara Cheng, Yuri Lee, and Sage Shurman, as well as works by the three winners of the Luna Lab/River and Rail call for scores: Abby Metcalf, Lola Miller-Henline, and Xingy Song.
The performance will be given at 1:45pm the Old City Performing Arts Center in downtown Knoxville and admission is "pay what you wish". with proceeds going to River and Rail and the Luna Composition Lab.
