Traditional Irish Arts of Knoxville is proud to present a trio of America's finest traditional Irish musicians. North Channel will bring the tunes and songs of Ireland and Scotland to Knoxville, TN. for a night of world-class music. Join us Saturday, September 12th at the Historic Laurel Theater. The performance will begin at 8 pm.
North Channel is the musical collaboration of fiddler Rebecca Baumbach, piper and whistle player, Skip Cleavinger, and multi-instrumentalist, John Mock. These musicians have played with some of the biggest names in music, including Ricky Skaggs, James Taylor, and Dolly Parton.
Along with performing traditional music from Ireland and Scotland, the band seeks to highlight tunes that are firmly rooted in the musical traditions of both countries. These tunes were carried by musicians traveling for work or emigrating for more opportunity. We find these tunes to be especially meaningful because they reflect both the cultural importance of traditional music and its remarkable ability to adapt and evolve - a living tradition.
The “North Channel” is a narrow stretch of sea that links Northern Ireland and Scotland; the distance being just 12 miles wide at its narrowest point. The band chose this name to honor the close musical ties between these Celtic nations.
