Hearth & Timber: 18th-Century Hygiene and Self-Care

Hearth & Timber: 18th-Century Hygiene and Self-Care

Join us for the second installment of our Hearth & Timber: Experiences of the Past series at Marble Springs! This month, we’re diving into the world of 18th-century hygiene and self-care—from frontier practicality to fashionable beauty routines.
🧴 The program will be held at our spring house grotto, a fitting historic setting for this immersive experience. It begins with a guided talk on how early Americans understood health and cleanliness, covering the science, traditions, and cultural expectations that shaped daily life.
👐 After the lecture, participants will try their hand at crafting historical-inspired DIY items like lavender water, tooth powder, and other cosmetic or hygiene concoctions based on real 18th-century practices.
👥 Audience Advisory: This program includes historical discussion of the human body, hygiene, and bodily functions as they were understood in the 18th century. While content will be presented in a respectful and educational manner, some topics may not be suitable for all audiences. This program is recommended for ages 12 and up; parental discretion is advised.
