Conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya was in Knoxville recently to conduct Oliver Herbert in the Dvořák cello concerto, also the Rosenkavalier suite and a new work by Missy Mazzoli. Music director of the Chicago Opera Theatre, 2020 Chicagoan of the year, she is in demand with orchestra and opera companies around the world, making her debuts this past season with the Hamburg Staatsoper and English National Opera as well as the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics. Also a champion of new music, with more than 40 world premieres, she returns to conduct the much-anticipated The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing in Chicago in March. Charlotte Wilson catches up with her to discuss conducting and the future of music.

Listen to the broadcast of Lidiya Yankovskaya conducting cellist Oliver Herbert with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, 8pm Tuesday February 14 on WUOT 91.9FM and wuot.org
