The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Aram Demirjian, will perform an exhilarating program of music by Samuel Barber, Maurice Ravel, Ottorino Respighi, and Carlos Simon, on Thursday, January 20th and Friday, January 21st, both at 7:30pm. As usual, this Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Concert will be given in the magnificent Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville. The four works on this performance all possess a beautiful and rich tone color, which lends itself to conveying a sense of place or atmosphere, as Aram Demirjian explains in this interview with WUOT's Morning Concert host, Melony Dodson.
The concert begins with Maurice Ravel's La Valse, which takes to audience to a Viennese ballroom, only...something's not quite right with this waltz, which spins out of control. Next, concertmaster, William Shaub, will take the spotlight, as he performs Samuel Barber's incredibly expressive, but difficult, Violin Concerto. The audience will then be transported to a block in Harlem through Carlos Simon's The Block. Concluding the performance will be Ottorino Respighi's epic Pines of Rome, which will be presented in "surround sound", with a brass section playing from the balcony and the organ pipes, located within the walls of the theatre, completely enveloping the audience in a thrilling mass of sound.
