Y-12 Protesters Remain in Jail, Await Judge's Decision

Matt Shafer Powell

Three nuclear protesters convicted in a federal court May 8 remain in jail while  U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar considers whether they should be released prior to their September sentencing hearing.    A jury convicted Megan Rice, Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli of depredation of federal property and injuring national defense.  The combined charges carry a maximum of 30 years in prison.  The three activists, calling themselves Transform Now Plowshares, admit they broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge last July, where they splashed blood and defaced the wall of a building that houses the bulk of the federal government's bomb-grade uranium.
