Karen Lloyd’s research focuses on microbes that are buried deep within the earth, so she’s worked in a variety of environments: the deep ocean, volcanic arcs in Central America and South America, and, most recently, on the permafrost of the Arctic. Lloyd is an Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee. WUOT’s Chrissy Keuper spoke with Lloyd about her research for the Arctic Microbial Permafrost Degradation (AMP’D) project. Her team will be conducting studies and gathering samples for three years in Svalbard, Norway, a cluster of islands north of the Barents Sea, overlapping the Arctic Circle.
