Kate Brown is a professor of history at the University of Maryland and specializes in the history of the Soviet Union. Brown was considering writing a book about the 1986 nuclear spill at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, when she says she realized something important. She wrote a book about it, called Plutopia: Nuclear Families, Atomic Cities, and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters.
