More than $27 million in federal grants will help quell congestion on the state’s roads and improve Tennessee’s air quality.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation will split that $27 million into 31 grants for 11 communities, including Knox County: One is for the Knox County Traffic Signal Coordination Project, putting better traffic control in congested areas, especially West Knox County; the other is for the Knox County Advanced Traffic Management System, which will institute a traffic operations center.
Some funding will go to the Sevier County Tourist Signal and Coordination Project, to smooth congestion in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg.
Lenoir City will design a new signal system for 20 intersections from Interstate 75 to US Highway 321 toward Maryville.
TDOT will use the largest portion of funding, about $4.4 million, for the HELP Truck program, assisting on highways following an accident or breakdown.
