Tennessee Reveals School District Accountability Results

tennessee.gov

The Tennessee Department of Education has released another round of ratings under a new accountability system for the state’s schools. It’s the second time the Tennessee Department of Education has graded schools under a 2011 waiver from federal benchmarks set in No Child Left Behind. Under the new system, districts and schools are identified as exemplary - in need of subgroup improvement - or in need of improvement. The system-wide report released this week shows three Tennessee school districts were considered in need of improvement, none were in East Tennessee.

But with the exception of Elizabethton City Schools, the Department of Education found the rest of East Tennessee’s school systems are “in need of subgroup improvement,” which means districts showed stagnation or even decline in serving specific students. In all, the majority of the state’s districts are “in need of subgroup improvement,” with 128 of 136 districts on the state’s list.
