Nief-Norf ensemble presents three sets at Big Ears Festival

The Knoxville-based contemporary music ensemble, Nief-Norf, presents three sets at this year's Big Ears Festival.  Each set has a different theme and features music by numerous composers.  Dr. Andrew Bliss, the artistic director of the ensemble and also Director of Percussion at the University of TN talked with Morning Concert host, Melony Dodson, about the music that they are performing and a little bit about the group itself. Additionally, he discusses the finale concert of the festival, which he will co-direct with Steven Schick: a performance of John Luther Adams' Inuksuit, which will be presented outdoors at Ijams Nature Center at 12pm.

Nief-Norf performs Thursday, March 31st at 10:30pm at The Square Room, Friday, April 1st at 12:30pm, also at the Square Room, and Saturday April 2nd at 11am at "The Sanctuary." More information on the Big Ears Festival is available at bigearsfestival.com

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
