Internationally-Acclaimed Vocal Ensemble Voces8 Performs In Maryville

There are few artists who achieve "rock star" status in the Classical music world, but the British vocal ensemble Voces8 is among them. Recording for the Decca classics label, this eight-member a capella group has topped the Classical charts time and time again with their wide-ranging albums that feature music by contemporary pop stars, such as Ben Folds, to Renaissance motets by Thomas Tallis.

Artistic director and countertenor, Barney Smith, talks with Melony Dodson about how Voces8 achieves its perfectly tuned and blended sound and about the importance of rehearsal. The group is passionate about bringing music education to all schools and carries that mission when performing around the world. Voces8 performs in Maryville at the Clayton Center for the Arts Friday, November 9th at 7:30pm. Tickets and information at claytonartscenter.com

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
