Ross Karre, co-artistic director of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) says that he views contemporary classical music like going to see a new movie at the cinema. You don't know what to expect, but you walk into the theatre with an open mind and you're excited to see and experience something new.
Founded in 2001, ICE is a thirty-six member collective that performs, commissions and records new music, often working directly with the composer. They have over thirty recordings to their name. The New Yorker has called them "the new gold standard for new-music." They are performing three sets at Big Ears Festival 2019. Music by four contemporary female composers: Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Ellen Reid, Carla Kihlstedt, and Ashley Fure.
