Cellist Clarice Jensen Talks About Pedals, Composing, and Drone Music

Cellist Clarice Jensen didn't grow up listening to or playing contemporary Classical music, but when she moved to New York to attend Juilliard, her teachers and the city exposed her to a brand new world of music. She soon became interested in creating new music and not so much in recreating old music.

A few years ago, Jensen began experimenting with the use of pedals and loopers and found that she suddenly had a huge pallete of sounds and colors available at her feet. Her new album, For This From That Will Be Filled is her first solo recording and includes music by Johann Johannsson, Michael Harrison, and Jensen's own composition, which is the title track. She will perform her album for the Big Ears Festival audience on Thursday, March 21st at 10:30pm, enhanced by Jonathan Turner's visuals that blur the lines of reality.

Clarice is also the founder of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) who will perform a set with composer/pianist Harold Budd on Saturday, March 23rd at 9pm. This performance, given in the beautiful acoustic of St. Johns Cathedral downtown, will present old and new compositions by Budd.

More information as well as a detailed scheduled can be found at www.bigearsfestival.org

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
