Marble City Opera Presents The US Premiere Of The "Nero Monologues"

Nero was the last Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. By all accounts, he wasn't a pleasant man, but his tyrannous behavior inspired several composers to write an opera about him, including Monteverdi, Mascagni, and Boito. However, all of these works portray just one side of this complicated man. Writer and singer, Sarah Toth, decided to explore the lesser-known side of Nero and together, with composer Peter James Learn, and with the poetry of Geoffrey Lehman, she created a new chamber opera entitled the Nero Monologues

Marble City Opera will present the US premiere of this work, which was previously performed in London, on November 1, 2, and 4, all at 7:30pm and will be performed at Candoro Marble in South Knoxville. The Nero Monologues feature Toth as Nero and will be accompanied by the Inner Voices string quartet and pianist Danny Brian.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
