Peace Rally in East Knoxville

Knoxville's East Side has long had a reputation as a neighborhood plagued by blight, poverty and crime. In fact, the crime rate in East Knoxville is about three times the national average. And crime typically increases along with spring and summer temperatures. But some residents of East Knoxville say they're not satisfied to sit back and hope things improve. They're planning a Peace march and rally tomorrow night. Jacqueline Wimbley of Eternal Life’s Restoration Outreach is one of the organizers and she spoke with WUOT's Matt Shafer Powell...

Bill Fox: Director of UT's Center for Business and Economic Research

The University of Tennessee's Center for Business and Economic Research has released a study of the UT system's impact on the state's economy. According to the report, all of UT's campuses and research facilities bring at least $2.5 billion in income to the state each year and support more than 53,600 jobs. Gregory Button on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 20th, British Petroleum's Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling platform exploded. The explosion killed several workers and led to a continuing spill of millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Chrissy Keuper speaks with University of Tennessee professor Gregory Button, who studies environmental disasters and recovery, including the Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill and Hurricane Katrina. Button says the press and some environmentalists are somewhat mistaken in comparing the Gulf spill to the 1989 Exxon-Valdez spill, but there are definitely some similarities... Listen Now

A recent Pew Research Center poll found only 22 percent of Americans could say they trust the federal government "almost always or most of the time". That’s among the lowest scores in half a century. And a recent Rasmussen poll found only 11% of us think Congress is doing a "good or excellent" job. This discontent with Washington has spurred a variety of grass roots efforts to unseat the government. But few are as specific and direct about that goal as the members of GOOOH. Their primary objective is to unseat every last member of Congress in the November election---all 435 of them. Republican, Democrat, Independent---they’re all out.
