Allan began working at WUOT in June, 1984. His first position was the overnight announcer. That's right! 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday-Friday. After Regina Dean became Executive Director, Allan started working normal daylight hours, serving as the replacement announcer for the other staff announcers and becoming the traffic director, converting from a do-it-yourself to a computerized traffic system. In 2001, he became the host of the Afternoon Concert. While working the overnight shift, he began a process, which continues to this day, of creating a computerized listing of all the recordings in the WUOT library. The next project Allan undertook was the creation of U T Concert Hall, which presents one-hour programs of concerts recorded by UTK's Department of Music. From 1986 to 2003, he was the recording engineer for the Knoxville Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, producing the programs which are currently broadcast during the spring on WUOT. In 2003, Allan started taking his microphones to various venues in the greater Knoxville area to record performances for broadcast. The result was a new program called Around Knoxville, which is usually airing once or twice a month. In 2004 he became the supervisor of the student announcing staff.
