A service in song and word that has become one of the nation’s most cherished holiday celebrations. Tickets to the event, which takes place at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, are always gone months in advance. The festival—now in its 134th year—includes hymns, carols, choral works, and orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians who are members of five choirs and the St. Olaf Orchestra.

11 PM – 12 AM. Joy to the World. A live performance of holiday jazz hosted by pianist Bob Thompson. Produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting since 1993 in Charleston, WV. Thompson welcomes guest vocalist Catherine Russell to the stage. An impassioned and versatile vocalist, Russell has performed or recorded with a dizzingly impressive array of trend-setting artists, including Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, Cyndi Lauper and Isaac Hayes, among others. The " Village Voice" calls her "Incredibly Talented and Classy," Terry Gross of "Fresh Air" says, "Catherine Russell is a terrific singer" while "The New Yorker" praises her "luscious voice."

Saturday, December 20
10– 11 PM. The Pleasures of Winter
An annual, live-performance, winter holiday music special hosted by folk duo Jay Ungar & Molly Mason and recorded at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York. The music includes fiddle tunes, vintage jazz, beautiful waltzes and original songs, all with a seasonal flavor. This year's show is a collection of the hosts' performances, featuring a variety of guest musicians sitting in with the house band including: Butch Thompson, David Bromberg, Kate Pierson of the B52s, Tony Trischka, Laurel Masse and many more of Ungar and Mason's musical friends.

11 PM – 12 AM. Christmas With Madrigalia
Click to enlarge image.On a summer night in 1975, a small group of singing friends in Rochester, N.Y., decided to form a madrigal group. The original members of Madrigalia performed their first Christmas concert at the University of Rochester the following year, and in the 33 years that have followed, this annual holiday celebration has become a beloved tradition in Western New York. In "Christmas With Madrigalia," host Jeanne Fisher showcases the ensemble performing with a second chamber group, Quartsemble. The music includes Archangelo Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" and Marc-Antoine Charpentier's "Midnight Mass for Christmas Eve," along with works by Almon Bock, Guillaume Costeley and carol settings by American composers.

11 PM – 12 AM. Carols for Dancing
"Carols for Dancing" explores the intimate connection between song and dance in this rich heritage of holiday music. Built around vigorous performances by Renaissonics — an award-winning improvisatory Renaissance dance band that produced new arrangements for this special — the program tells the story of the mid-winter holiday dance tradition with brief, intriguing narratives by host Ellen Kushner, creator and host of PRI's "Sound & Spirit."

Monday, December 22
8– 9 PM. The Rose Ensemble: An Early American Christmas
Gorgeous Shaker Tunes, Kentucky Harmonies, and Acadian dances done by one of America’s premiere early-music ensembles. Since it began in 1996, The Rose Ensemble has surprised and delighted audiences with performances of music from centuries past. Their 2008 Christmas program highlights the treasures of Appalachia.

10– 11 PM. Echoes of Christmas
Moving selections of choral classics celebrating Christmas. The Dale Warland Singers provided magical performances to listeners across the country for over 30 years and were acclaimed as America’s premiere choir. Their signature holiday concert—beloved by public radio listeners nationwide—was the annual Echoes of Christmas program. Drawing upon the archive of their live performances, Dale Warland and host Brian Newhouse create a very special Christmas musical treat.

11 PM – 12 AM. Conspirare: Christmas at the Carillon
America’s reigning mixed-voice choir in a surprising classical- and popular-music collage for the season. The Austin, TX choir of 38 voices is America’s best-kept musical secret—but not for long as their powerful performances gain them new audiences worldwide. This special is a fresh take on Christmas, blending sacred and secular songs, as well as centuries-old classics and pop standards.

10– 11 PM. A Chanticleer Christmas
The San Francisco based men’s chorus, Chanticleer, is one of the world’s best male choruses, recognized worldwide for their brilliant technique and musicality. This year’s program will be recorded live on December 10th in San Francisco.

11 PM – 12 AM. A Choral Christmas Card
A Choral Christmas Card is a coast-to-coast sampler of the country’s best choirs singing carols for the season.

Wednesday, December 24
7– 8 PM. Jazz Piano Christmas XIX.
This year, we’ll hear lots of Latin Jazz onstage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. This year’s exciting lineup includes Brazilian pianist and singer, Eliane Elias (pictured at left); Afro-Cuban jazz pianist and composer, Arturo O’Farrill; prolific pianist and composer of Latin and world music, Rebeca Mauleón; and New Orlean’s own premier modern jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis. Felix Contreas hosts.


8– 9 PM. Welcome Christmas
A perennial broadcast favorite featuring the Minneapolis-based ensemble, VocalEsssence. Recognized internationally as one of America's premier choral arts organizations, VocalEssence is led by the visionary Philip Brunelle.

9– 10 PM. Christmas with the Philadelphia Singers
This year, the chorus presents new twists on recognizable favorites in Stephen Chatman's "Carols of the Nativity," and renews the tradition of the Burt Family Carols with several Alfred Burt selections. Listeners also enjoy masterworks by Arvo Part, John Harbison and Abbie Betinis.

10– 11 PM. Choirs & Carols: An NPR Christmas
Hear musicians from around the world in NPR's performance studio as they share special holiday moments. Join host Lisa Simeone for ancient harmonies from Trio Medieval, traditional carols from the Riga Dom Boys Choir, and a rarely heard Christmas song by Sibelius, straight from Finland's YL Choir. The Pittsburgh Brass unpacks a pair of 500-pound bells to ring in the holiday, and the members of Trio Voronezh tune up a balalaika or two.

11 PM – 12 AM. A Harpist’s Christmas with Yolanda Kondonassis
America’s premiere harpist, Yolanda Kondonassis, celebrates the season with treasures of Christmas harp music. Yolanda has custom-created this program for American Public Media listeners, spotlighting her heavenly instrument alone and with Joshua Smith, flute and Cynthia Phelps, viola—two of America’s top professionals.

Acclaimed authors explore Hanukkah traditions in original stories written expressly for Hanukkah Lights. Hosted by Murray Horwitz and Susan Stamberg.

AMERICAN RADIO WORKS: What Killed Sergeant Gray

American RadioWorks investigates the mysterious death of an Iraq War veteran and uncovers new allegations of detainee abuse. This powerful documentary follows members of a U.S. Army unit and their struggle to come to terms with what they did, and didn't do, in Iraq.


VAN CLIBURN: MUSIC AND DIPLOMACY
     Saturday, October 25 10:00 PM – 12:00 AM.
A two-hour radio program commemorating the 50th anniversary of Van Cliburn's triumph in Moscow. In April 1958, this 6'7", red head from Texas won the First International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition derailing the Soviet's attempt to demonstrate cultural superiority during the Cold War, on the heels of their technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957.
